Melbourne Stars and Renegades Set to Merge Ahead of BBL 2026–27

The Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades are set to merge into a single franchise ahead of the 2026–27 BBL season, according to reports from Cricket Australia insiders. The move aims to strengthen Melbourne's representation in the competition and improve financial sustainability for both clubs.

The merged entity will reportedly be known under a new name, combining the best players from both squads. Star players like Marcus Stoinis (Melbourne Stars) and Will Sutherland (Melbourne Renegades) are expected to form the core of the new team.

Cricket Australia has been in talks with both franchise boards for several months. The merger, if confirmed, would reduce the BBL to seven teams for the 2026–27 season, with a potential eighth team being added from another city.

Both franchises have struggled to compete consistently in recent seasons despite having some of Australia's top talent. The Melbourne market, while large, has been split between the two clubs, affecting crowd attendance and merchandise revenue.

"This is a strategic decision to ensure the long-term health of BBL cricket in Melbourne," a Cricket Australia spokesperson is reported to have said. Official confirmation is expected before the squad nomination deadline in September 2026.
